The Rezang-la Full Moon Marathon 2023 is organizing as a tribute to the brave soldiers of the Indian Army who fought in the Battle of Rezang-la during the Indo-China War of 1962. Route 1: Manali to Keylong to Mahe to Pangong Lake

The route to reach Pangong Lake from Manali via Mahe. This route is approximately 467 km long and takes around 14 hours to cover. But it is not recommended to drive continuously without any breaks. Because of High altitude and low oxygen concentration in the air. So I would advise you to drive slowly and take frequent breaks during your journey to reach Pangong Lake from Manali. 

Before you start your journey from Manali to Pangong check the weather and road conditions. You are going to drive in a hilly area and there will always be a chance of bad weather and road blockades due to heavy snowfall snow or landslides. It is always advisable to check the weather forecast. 

Manali to Keylong:

Start from Manali and head north on NH3 towards Atal Tunnel Rohtang. After crossing the tunnel, you will reach Keylong, which is about 70 km away from Manali. The journey should take around 3 hours depending on road conditions.

Keylong to Pang-Debering Intersection Point:

From Keylong, take the Keylong-Leh Road (also known as the Leh-Manali Highway) towards Leh. After driving for about 266 km, you will reach the Pang-Debering Intersection Point. This point marks the intersection of two major roads – the Leh-Manali Highway and the road to Tso Kar Lake.

Pang-Debering Intersection Point to Mahe:

From the intersection point, continue on the Leh-Manali Highway towards Leh. After driving for about 75 km, you will reach the town of Mahe.

Mahe to Chushul:

From Mahe, take the road toward Chushul. This road is about 70 km long and should take around 3-4 hours to drive. Chushul is a small town located near the border with China.

The Union Territory of Ladakh has achieved another notable achievement as the ‘Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon 2023 has been officially registered in the Guinness Book of World Records as the highest half-marathon held on a frozen lake. The stunning scenery of Ladakh has been further enhanced by this achievement.

The Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon was organised through a partnership between the Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh and LAHDC Leh.
Approximately 75 runners from various parts of the globe participated in the marathon.

The winners of the Pangong Frozen Lake Half Marathon in the men’s category were
1st position: Rigzen Gyurmeth (Bib no:139) with a timing of 1:54:24;
2nd position: Muneeb (147) with a timing of 1:59:03 and,
3rd position: Arshad (164) with 2:00:19 running time.

Women’s category:
The winners of the Pangong Frozen Lake Half Marathon in women’s category,

1st position: Tsering Zangmo (bip no. 175) completed the marathon in 2:38:40;

Additionally, they expressed their appreciation for the support of Army, ITBP, BRO, LMGA, as well as the participation of PRI members, youth associations, and residents from nearby villages like Phobrang, Lukung, Spangmik, Maan, Merak, and the entire Durbuk sub-division. 

The speaker credited these groups for contributing to the success of the event.
He also states that the Pangong frozen lake Marathon aligns with the objectives and aspirations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Vibrant Village Program, which seeks to foster the development of rural communities.
He also mentioned that the Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon was started with the aim to promote winter tourism in the eastern border villages of Ladakh beyond the confined summer season.

Ladakh is one of the most popular travel destinations in India. Visiting Pangong Lake is a top priority for tourists, but few people know that the Himalayan glaciers are melting rapidly. For the same reason, Pangong Lake May not freeze over again because of climate change. That’s why Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL) also named this Pangong frozen lake marathon as “ The Last Run”.
Pangong Lake measures 700 square kilometres and lies at an altitude of 14,000 feet. Widely distributed on the border of Indochina. A thick layer of ice freezes here from November to March. The marathon will take place for the first time ever, at a height of 13,862 feet on 20 February 2023. One of the most stunning marathons in history, the Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon’s 21 kilometres entirely traverse Pangong Tso. Pangong Lake will be hosting the first-ever frozen lake marathon in South Asia.

The Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon will be so challenging due to the ice and cold, so runners will be selected based on past marathon and other high-altitude adventure sports experience (10,000 feet and above).
