I have read many article that claims that Khardung La Pass is the world’s highest motorable road. But it’s not true. Because the elevation/altitude is just 5,359 m (17,582 ft) above sea level. There are many Passes which are above Khardung La.

It is true when the road was built back then in 1976, Khardung La Pass was the world’s highest motorable road. Now many roads have been constructed by the Border Road Organization (BRO) which surpasses Khardung La Pass as the world’s highest motorable Road.

Khardungla Pass Oxygen Level

As we all know that when the altitude of a place goes up the concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere goes down. You know that the elevation of Khardungla Pass is 5359 meters (17,582 ft) above sea level, which is why the oxygen level of Khardungla Pass is also low. The oxygen level at Khardungla Pass is about 0.49 atm, which is 49%. It’s not recommended for tourists to stay more than 20 minutes at the top of Khardungla Pass

Khardungla Pass Temprature

The average elevation of Ladakh is 3000 Meters above sea level and Ladakh is considered a cold desert. Because of that the temperature is lower than in plain areas of India. As we discussed the altitude of Khardung La Pass above, is 5,359 m (17,582 ft) above sea level.

Usually, the temperature in high passes is very low. The average temperature of Khardungla Pass in summer is 20°C. During the winters, the average temperature of Khardungla Passla is around -40°C.

First-ever Frozen Pangong Lake Marathon in South Asia was held in 2023 to spread awareness of climate change and save the Himalayan Glaciers.

I am RøÕsh KB, Pursuing Master’s in Travel and Tourism Management from the University of Ladakh. I am writing this article from Ladakh itself. I have observed the preparation and execution of this event. I will share the right information about the 2nd Edition of Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon 2024.

The Second Edition of the Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon 2024 was held today 20 Feb 2024 at the Maan Village on the bank of Pangong Tso. The frozen Pangong Lake Marathon is considered the world’s highest frozen lake marathon. It was successfully organized by organized by Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh with the support of the Administration Union Territory of Ladakh. Indian Army also had full support to organize this event.

This Frozen Lake Marathon was participated by 120 runners from across the globe. Indian Army personnel and the surrounding villagers also participated run. There were 3 Categories in this run, which are as follows:

Full Marathon (42 KM)
Half Marathon (21.9 KM)
10 KM Run

Due to the heavy snowfall in Pangong Lake, the Full Marathon (42 KM) was canceled and the participants were asked to join the Half Marathon (21 KM). In these two categories, 120 Runners ran the Marathon on the Frozen Pangong Lake in heavy snowfall, the Pangong Lake was fully covered by the Snow and the temperature was below -15 °C. It is considered one of the hardest marathons to run in the entire world. Because Pangong Lake is located at an altitude of 14,273 ft above sea level, the runners have to run on the Pangong frozen lake.

The chief guests of the event were Shri. Ravinder Kumar and Shri Konchok Stanzin, Councillor Chushul Constituency.

According to the founders of Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL). The Second Edition of Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon has been successfully organized. Through this Marathon Runners and People will be aware of Himalayan glaciers and global warming. The Frozen Pangong Lake Marathon has become the world’s toughest marathon.

The main purpose of the Frozen Pangong Lake Marathon is to make people aware of the global warming and the rapidly melting of Himalayan glaciers due to climate change. Another purpose of the event is to promote Winter tourism in Ladakh, especially in the Changthang region of Ladakh.

Mr. Chamba Tsetan the founder of ASFL, Thanked the participants, volunteers, UT Administration of Ladakh, XIV Corps of Indian Army, Ladakh Police, and people of Maan, Merak for helping the Marathon a success.

An initiative initiated by the Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL), seeks to raise awareness of climate change via adventure and sport. The inaugural Frozen Lake Marathon in India offers great opportunities for participants. This year only 50 runners will be selected to participate in the 2nd edition of Frozen Pangong Lake Marathon.

One of the most well-liked tourist destinations in India is Ladakh. Tourists’ first priority is to visit Pangong Lake, but not many are aware of how quickly the Himalayan glaciers are melting. Pangong Lake might not ice over again due to climate change for the same reason. For this reason, the Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon has also been dubbed “The Last Run” by the Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL).
Pangong Lake is located at an elevation of 14,000 feet and covers 700 square kilometers. widely dispersed along the Indochina border. This place freezes over from November to March in a thick coating of ice. This lake is divided between China and India, with China owning two-thirds of it.

On February 20, 2024, the marathon will be held at a height of 13,862 feet for the first time ever. The Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon, one of the most beautiful marathons ever, covers Pangong Tso in its entirety during its 21 kilometers.

Rezang-la Full Moon Marathon was first ever moon light marathon in Ladakh organised by Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL), in collaboration with the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh, the District Administration Leh, and the Indian Army, recently hosted the inaugural Rezang-la Full Moon Marathon in Ladakh. The Journey Begins:

The full marathon covered a challenging 42 kilometers, Starting from the picturesque Merak Village along the beautiful shores of Pangong Lake. The runners ran on a journey through Ladakh’s diverse landscapes, with the beautiful lake as their starting point. Their destination was the historic Rizang-la War Memorial, a symbol of sacrifice and heroism from the 1962 war. This marathon wasn’t just a physical challenge; it was a tribute to the nation’s defenders and a testament to Ladakh’s natural beauty and rich history.

Race Highlights:

A total of 114 runners, both men and women, participated in the marathon, competing in two categories: the 42-kilometer full marathon and the 21.9-kilometer half marathon.

Sonam Rigzin secured the first position, completing the race in an impressive 1 hour and 44 minutes.
Chetan Namgyal secured the second position with a time of 1 hour and 47 minutes.
Sonam Chinba secured the third position, also with a timing of 1 hour and 47 minutes.

Women’s Category:

Tashi Ladol took the first position with an admirable timing of 1 hour and 51 minutes.
Stanzin Chorol secured the second position, completing the race in 2 hours and 40 minutes.
Thinless Angmo secured the third position with a timing of 2 hours and 44 minutes.

Stanzin Namgyal emerged as the winner with an incredible timing of 3 hours and 52 minutes.
Jigmet Singay claimed the second position, completing the grueling 42 kilometers in 4 hours and 24 minutes.
Padma Lundup secured the third position with a timing of 4 hours and 37 minutes.

Women’s Category:

Namgyal Angmo displayed remarkable strength and stamina to secure the first position, finishing the marathon in 4 hours and 27 minutes.
