First-ever Frozen Pangong Lake Marathon in South Asia was held in 2023 to spread awareness of climate change and save the Himalayan Glaciers.

I am RøÕsh KB, Pursuing Master’s in Travel and Tourism Management from the University of Ladakh. I am writing this article from Ladakh itself. I have observed the preparation and execution of this event. I will share the right information about the 2nd Edition of Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon 2024. Second Edition of Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon

The Second Edition of the Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon 2024 was held today 20 Feb 2024 at the Maan Village on the bank of Pangong Tso. The frozen Pangong Lake Marathon is considered the world’s highest frozen lake marathon. It was successfully organized by organized by Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh with the support of the Administration Union Territory of Ladakh. Indian Army also had full support to organize this event.

This Frozen Lake Marathon was participated by 120 runners from across the globe. Indian Army personnel and the surrounding villagers also participated run. There were 3 Categories in this run, which are as follows:

  • Full Marathon (42 KM)
  • Half Marathon (21.9 KM)
  • 10 KM Run

Due to the heavy snowfall in Pangong Lake, the Full Marathon (42 KM) was canceled and the participants were asked to join the Half Marathon (21 KM). In these two categories, 120 Runners ran the Marathon on the Frozen Pangong Lake in heavy snowfall, the Pangong Lake was fully covered by the Snow and the temperature was below -15 °C. It is considered one of the hardest marathons to run in the entire world. Because Pangong Lake is located at an altitude of 14,273 ft above sea level, the runners have to run on the Pangong frozen lake.

The chief guests of the event were Shri. Ravinder Kumar and Shri Konchok Stanzin, Councillor Chushul Constituency.

According to the founders of Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL). The Second Edition of Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon has been successfully organized. Through this Marathon Runners and People will be aware of Himalayan glaciers and global warming. The Frozen Pangong Lake Marathon has become the world’s toughest marathon.

The main purpose of the Frozen Pangong Lake Marathon is to make people aware of the global warming and the rapidly melting of Himalayan glaciers due to climate change. Another purpose of the event is to promote Winter tourism in Ladakh, especially in the Changthang region of Ladakh.

Mr. Chamba Tsetan the founder of ASFL, Thanked the participants, volunteers, UT Administration of Ladakh, XIV Corps of Indian Army, Ladakh Police, and people of Maan, Merak for helping the Marathon a success.
